Getting ready to move?
Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, packing up your whole life and cramming everything into boxes can be completely overwhelming—especially when you don’t have a clue where to start!
The key to an easy move is to get organized beforehand (or enlist a team of packing professionals) so the day of the big move goes as smoothly as possible.
Here are a few tips that may help you do just that.
Be proactive & pack early
Get the packing started early: a few weeks (or more for our overachievers!) before the move.
Cut the clutter
Go through your clothes and belongings, and purge anything that you haven’t used in the last year or so.
These are the items that you know you don’t want to keep, but haven’t had the chance to give it the official boot—we all know those items all too well…
Doing this ahead of time means that you’ll be moving fewer items day-of, and you’ll have plenty of time to drop the unwanted items off at your local charity or arrange for a pickup before you finish packing.
Calling all procrastinators: set a timer & pack
You know you need to pack, but you just can’t get yourself away from binging on Netflix.
And you have time, right?
You’re not moving until… wait a second, tomorrow?!
Sounds like procrastination got the best of you. Avoid this situation by tricking yourself into packing in smaller increments:
Set a timer for an hour and use that time to pack and only pack!
Don’t overstuff your boxes
It’s easy to just nonsensically throw your belongings into a box and if it doesn’t close? No big deal, you’ll just put that one on top.
Except, all of your boxes can’t close properly because they’re stuffed to the max.
Although you’re using each box to its fullest advantage, you’re actually making the task harder for yourself.
Not only will your belongings be crammed and therefore unsafe for transportation, but will you even be able to lift the box and load it onto the moving truck?
Probably not… so don’t over pack your moving boxes.
Don’t under pack your boxes
On the other hand, you don’t want your boxes to be too roomy.
The emptier the space you have, the more likely it will be that your items are jostled when on route.
Label boxes by the room
Make sure you label every box with both contents it contains and its final destination in your new place.
If you don’t anticipate unpacking everything the day you move in, be specific and include a packing list on the outside of the box so that you don’t have to hunt for your coffee pot.
Pro tip: make sure you label the sides, and not just the top of your boxes. This makes it so much easier to identify the contents even when boxes are stacked on top of one another.
Forget about boxes and use bins
Traditional cardboard boxes are great for packing up the majority of your belongings, but some of the crucial things that you’ll need the moment you start to unload are better off in a clear plastic bin, according to an article from BuzzFeed.
Some moving day essentials might include:
- Toilet paper
- Trash bags
- Paper towels
- Power strips
- Phone chargers
- Kitchen essentials
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
Wrap and pack kitchen items individually
Utensils and fragile dishes are some of the more fragile items in your home, making packing the kitchen a pretty difficult task..
That’s why we have to take care when maneuvering them during the moving process. Wrap each dish and glassware individually before placing them in boxes together.
If possible, snag a box that have separators that you can insert to keep everything put while in transit—you can usually find these at your local liquor store!
Plastic wrap your toiletries
The last thing you want on moving day is for your shampoo to burst open all over the rest of your belongings.
Plastic wrap is the secret.
Cover the opening of all your liquid bottles with plastic wrap before putting the top back on!
Moving supplies don’t come cheap—instead of ordering a ton of expensive bubble wrap, wrap your dishes and breakables in chunky winter sweaters and clothing you won’t need right when you move in!
Hire professional movers
Hiring movers will take most of the stress out of moving day, as long as you do your research and choose an experienced company to go with.
Dowell’s Moving & Storage has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable moving company in the Victoria area, and we’d be happy to lend a hand on moving day.
